Dear Neighbor,

This weekend our community lost a valued member due to COVID-19. A longtime employee of Sun Wah BBQ, Jose Ulises Evaristo Martinez (known as Spike), passed away last week. Many of us know Spike as the duck carver at Sun Wah. We send our thoughts and condolences to the Cheng family and the rest of the team at Sun Wah, as well as to Spike’s family and friends. The Chengs are raising funds to help cover the end-of-life costs, and any remaining funds will be used to support post-high school endeavors for his children — click here for more information and to support this effort.

This is a sobering reminder that we are still fighting against a highly contagious and deadly virus. We each have a responsibility to keep one another safe. Please get vaccinated, wear a mask in public when you are indoors, and observe social distancing when possible. St. Gertrude’s Church is partnering with Swedish Hospital this Saturday, October 2, to host a free vaccine clinic. Click here for details. Visit chicago.gov/coronavirus for more COVID resources from the Chicago Department of Public Health.

Yesterday I joined Care for Real Executive Director Gregory Gross, his team, Care for Real Board members, and hundreds of neighbors, along with my fellow local elected leaders, to celebrate Care for Real’s 50th Anniversary. Care for Real has been a lifeline for many members of our community, providing critical resources like access to healthy food, clothing, pet supplies, and more. Care for Real is an anchor in our community, building connections among neighbors and directing support where it is needed. Click here to learn more about how you can support their work.

Berger Park Shoreline Stabilization ProjectAs you may be aware, the Chicago Park District and the Chicago Department of Transportation are working on an emergency stabilization and shore protection project at Berger Park. Beginning on September 20, 2021 thru November 12, 2021 the work we are doing at this location will require intermittent curb lane restrictions along northbound Sheridan Road for deliveries of materials from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM on weekdays. While the project is underway, portions of Berger Park will be closed. The work consists of placement of armor stone along the Lake Michigan shoreline at Berger Park to arrest further erosion and damage caused by several storms from 2020, and reconstruction of the gravel trail behind the revetment. These emergency measures will construct a rubble mound revetment and fill the eroded areas of parkland immediately behind the revetment. While the project is underway, portions of Berger Park will be closed.
