Weekly Update from Your Alderman – July 14, 2017

Weekly Update from Your Alderman: Public Safety, Edgewater Night Out, St. Ita’s Tastes of Summer, Welcome Pop Hair Salon, Dog Park Update, and more!
July 14, 2017
Dear Neighbor:

Public safety is my number one priority as alderman. My office works closely with the Chicago Police Department to address safety issues within our community. In addition, we work with many community partners to provide a full calendar of outdoor events throughout the ward that provide positive and safe activities for families and teens. Click here to see the full calendar of Safe Summer Nights events. In addition to positive community programming, neighbors must remain vigilant. It is critical that you call 911 if you observe illegal or suspicious activity. We have fostered strong partnerships with the 20th and 24th Police Districts, and it is vital that we uphold our end of the relationship by informing them of any criminal activity we see. If you have any questions about public safety in the ward, please contact Marko Zaric at marko@48thward.org. Please also mark your calendar for National Night Out on Tuesday, August 1. See below for more information on local events on National Night Out.

Tonight is the kick-off of the Edgewater Chamber of Commerce’s Edgewater Night Out series. Every Friday night through August 18 from 5:30 to 7:30pm, the Chamber is sponsoring live entertainment and activities on Broadway, with free treats for the first 50 kids to arrive. Tonight’s entertainment is Lil’ Buds Theatre in front of Edge Theater, 5451 N. Broadway, with treats provided by Maddiebird. Upcoming events include Storytown Improv, live music and dance from Pivot Arts, garden gnome painting, and more. Click here for the full schedule.

Tomorrow is St. Ita’s annual Tastes of Summer food festival, from 9:30am to 9pm. St. Ita Catholic Church, 1220 W. Catalpa, is considered Chicago’s most ethnically diverse church with 40 different languages spoken by more than 1,000 parishioners. Tastes of Summer will feature 50 food options from 12 countries, including Guatemala, Mauritius, Vietnam, Poland, Nigeria, and more. There will be live music, children’s activities, and cash prizes. Proceeds from the event will benefit the church’s programs and community outreach. Click here for more information.

Yesterday we welcomed a new business to Broadway. Pop Hair, 5642 N. Broadway, is a full-service hair salon serving men and women. Please show owner Kenny Moore a warm welcome to our community.

Dog Park Update
Thank you to the many neighbors who have attended community meetings and reached out to my office in support of a new dog park in the ward to replace the dog beach lost at Foster Ave. due to rising lake levels. We have been working closely with the Chicago Park District to move this project forward. This park will be located in the park east of Lake Shore Drive near Bryn Mawr (see map). The Park District is going through the procurement process now for fence construction. I expect the park will open mid-August. Many of you have asked to be on the volunteer committee to govern and maintain the park. We will hold a committee meeting the first week of August. If you would like to be added to our list of committee members, please email Ally Brisbin at ally@48thward.org.

Have a great weekend, enjoy the Edgewater Farmers Market tomorrow morning and our community’s beautiful beaches.

Alderman, 48th Ward

SSA #26 Services Update
SSA 26 is getting a summer face lift! Beginning Monday, July 17, Pressure Washing Unlimited will be cleaning the sidewalks in SSA 26 (click here for map of district). The work will be done at night to reduce the impact on traffic and pedestrians, over the course of the week as the crew works its way from Devon down Broadway to Foster, including the side streets going east to the Red Line. Tree trimming, performed by the arborists of Bartlett Tree Experts, will also begin this month, starting with the section of the district spanning from Hollywood to Thorndale. If you have questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to the Edgewater Chamber of Commerce! (info@edgewater.org773-561-6000).

Public Safety Update
National Night Out
Beat 2433 National Night Out Activities
6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, August 1, 2017

On the occasion of National Night Out, some 80 strong Thorndale positive loiterers, among the strategies responsible for reclaiming the 1100 block of Thorndale from gang bangers and drug dealers, will reune and walk the walk they patrolled for nearly six years. They will be led by five elected officials – Ald. Harry Osterman, Cook County Commissioner Bridget Gainer, State Rep. Kelly Cassidy, State Sen. Heather Steans and Leslie Combs for U.S. Congresswoman Janice Schakowsky. They will assemble in the CPD 24th District at the northwest corner of Thorndale and Winthrop and walk down Winthrop to Hollywood to Kenmore to Granville to Winthrop to Thorndale. They will carry public-safety, fight- crime posters created by CPD 20th District school children and summer interns in Alderman Osterman’s office. Meanwhile, kids will be engaged in sports-related activities, including basketball, on the Swift School playground, led by CPD 20th District officers and Alderman Osterman’s office. For kids less sports inclined, Li’l Buds Theatre, Edgewater’s resident company, will involve the young-uns in dramatic adventures, also on the Swift playground. Gobs of food courtesy four generous Thorndale and Broadway business owners will be served to all. They are Ann Sather’s, Castle Food/Liquors, Little Corner Restaurant and Patio Beef. CPD 24th DAC giveaways will be distributed to all.

Free Burglary Assessment
The 20th and 24th Police District are offering free home burglary assessments for our neighborhoods. We would like to do up to 5 assessments at any given time. This is a free service provided by the Police Districts.  Neighbors are invited walk together during the assessment as each property may present a new opportunity for a burglar to gain access to your home.  Identifying these various ways a burglar can come into a home will help everyone be a little more prepared and safer by pinpointing distinct methods to secure vulnerabilities. Please contact Marko Zaric in my office if you would like to participate in this free service. He can be reached at 773-784-5277 or Marko@48thward.org. This is for residential multi-unit buildings as well as single family homes.
