Weekly Update from your Alderman – June 1, 2012

Weekly Update from Alderman Harry Osterman: Buttercup Park Opening, Construction Updates, CTA and more!

June 1, 2012

Dear Neighbor,

This morning, I had the pleasure of joining community members in opening the renovated Buttercup Park at Sheridan and Ainslie. The renewed park has received a 1 million dollar renovation which includes a new community plaza, new playground equipment, fresh green space and chess tables. I want to thank PC Gooden-Smile and former Alderman Mary Ann Smith who, along with many others, were the driving force behind the renovation.
On Saturday, June 16, I hope you will join the Buttercup Park Advisory Council, my office and other special guests for a ribbon cutting ceremony and grand opening. Click here for the press release. The transformation of Buttercup Park will be a wonderful recreational and congregational area for many years to come, and it will contribute to making this community a safe, happy, and vibrant place to live.

Tonight at midnight, the Granville station will close for 6 weeks (until July 13, 2012) to undergo renovations to the track, platform, station house and commercial spaces. Thorndale and Loyola stations will remain open during this time as well as regular bus service on Sheridan Rd. Click here to read more information about the Granville station closure and the Red Ahead project. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact our office at 773-784-5277 or Harry@48thward.org.

Safety Update

On Tuesday, at approximately 2:30 a.m., a shooting occurred on Broadway near Foster resulting in the death of a 14 year old west Rogers Park boy. The shooter, a known Gangster Disciple gang member from Rogers Park was arrested hours later, and he was charged and held without bail Wednesday morning.

I have met with the police commanders of our community to discuss how the police, local businesses, residents and I can help prevent events like this one in the future, and I will be meeting with the businesses in the area where the shooting occurred to make sure they are doing their part. Given the time that this event occurred, and the age of the victim, I want to take this opportunity to remind you of Chicago’s Curfew Ordinance. Children, aged 12 to 16 must be home or with a legal guardian after 10:00 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11:00 p.m. on weekends. For children under 12, the times are 8:30 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 9:00 p.m. on the weekends.

Please help keep our city’s children safe by reporting to police curfew violations you see occurring in our neighborhood. It is a small but important step that could very well prevent something like this from happening again.

Construction Updates

Edgewater Library
Burling Builders has been removing concrete forms and insulating the building foundation walls. Next week they will be installing drain tile and backfilling the grade beams to make the site level so that steel can be delivered. Steel fabricators around the area have been busy cutting and welding steel material into columns and beams shown on the drawings. This material is scheduled to begin delivery the end of next week and it will take several days. Once its on site, the steel erector will use a “crane” to set the columns and hoist the beams that will form the super structure of your new library.

Everyone will finally be able to see something happening behind that “green” fence at Broadway and Elmdale.

Broadway Water Main Project
The crew has been installing a water main pipe that crosses east to west over Broadway Avenue. This work has restricted traffic in Broadway to one lane in each direction during working hours. Traffic should be temporarily restored to normal beginning tomorrow. In the future a second crossing will be installed just south of Bryn Mawr as shown in the attached sketch. This crossing will have a similar traffic setup and last approximately three workdays. After the completion of the pipe work both trenches will be poured with concrete base course, requiring traffic to be reduced to one lane each direction for another two days

Glenwood Water Main Project
A water main project on Glenwood from Foster to Balmoral will begin in the next few days. Here is what to expect:
Thursday 5/31/12:
Crew will post parking restriction signage, deliver barricades and porta-johns, look for and mark b-boxes and water services.
Friday 6/1/12:
Crew will excavate test holes at 3 or 4 locations, continue locating water services, deliver trailers, additional excavator. backhoe/loaders, jersey barriers and plates to jobsite. Forestry is tentatively scheduled to begin tree trimming.
Monday 6/4/12:
Pipe, fire hydrants and fittings will be delivered and laid out in parkway or along curb in staging areas if parkway landscaping is present. 2 excavation crews will begin installing new pipe on west side of Glenwood starting at Foster and moving north, and starting at Balmoral and moving south.
Tuesday 6/5/12 to Friday 6/8/12:
Water main installation will continue. Road closed signs will be present but residents will have access to parking in non-work zone areas. Crew will accommodate residents’ pick-up / drop-off, delivery and moving vehicles and handicapped access requirements as necessary.

Master Plan Update

A huge thank you to everyone who has been involved so far with the 48th Ward Master Plan. Each of our 11 committees have met at least twice (some have met more!) and back in March, we held our first community visioning meeting.

Over the next two weeks, my staff and I will be meeting with the Chairs of each committee to discuss the themes, ideas, issues and goals that have emerged so far. This summer, we will be asking the broader community to weigh in on the work that has been done so far. In our weekly newsletter, we will promote which events will have a Master Plan component. We are excited to continue to work towards a shared vision for the future.

The White Attic™, a small, refinished vintage furniture shop, was born on August 4th, 2004 and they offer refinished vintage furniture from the early 1900’s, mid century, on up. Each piece is hand selected and refinished in house by The White Attic™ team. Rarely using strippers, the team removes all of the original finishes by hand prior to applying new.

The end result depends on the piece of furniture. Every piece is scrutinized in deciding the final finishes. Some pieces are completely painted in our signature low VOC white, black, or light aqua. Some are a combination of paint and natural wood. Some are completely covered in our hand blended stains and satin topcoats.
