Weekly Update from your Alderman – June 15, 2012

Weekly Update from Alderman Harry Osterman: Summer editon highlighting all the great attractions of our area, watermain construction updates, and much more!

June 15, 2012

Dear Neighbor,

Today marks the end of the 2011-2012 school year for CPS students. I want to congratulate our students for working hard this year and wish everyone a happy summer. Our community is a special place to be in the summer. Not only do we have beautiful beaches and parks to enjoy but we have farmers markets, day camps, festivals and so much more.

We also have two exciting new businesses! Ann Sather has now opened on the corner of Broadway and Granville. Ann Sather also has a location by Clark and Foster in Andersonville and they have now officially joined the Edgewater community. The hours of this location are Monday-Friday 7am-3pm and Saturday-Sunday 7am-4pm.

At 1138 W. Bryn Mawr the new Lovely Bake Shop has opened. This is Lovely’s second location in addition to their Logan Square shop. Their hours are Monday-Friday 7am-7pm, Saturday 9am-6pm and Sunday 9am-5pm. We are very excited to welcome these new businesses.

Finally, I want to thank you for your cooperation with the transition to grid garbage collection. We are officially finished with our first week of the new system. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the 48th Ward office at 773-784-5277.

I hope you enjoy this newsletter’s special summer focus. I look forward to seeing you and your family around the community this summer!

Sincerely,
Harry Osterman
Alderman, 48th Ward

Senn Honored by Steppenwolf
Senn magnet Fine Arts has been selected by Steppenwolf Theater to be the new participating educational partner for their Immersion Residency! This is very exciting as it is the most exclusive and deepest level of partnership Steppenwolf offers. This is an exceptional honor.

Construction Update

Edgewater Library

Work on the Edgewater Library site is quickly progressing. Steel installation began on Monday June 11, 2012 and is expected to take 3 weeks.

Glenwood Watermain Project
Thursday 6/14/12
Crew completed first connection of new 8” main on Glenwood to existing 16” water main at Foster, valve basin installed at Glenwood / Farragut intersection.
Friday 6/15/12

Crew will finish backfilling / plating of excavations, clean and organize job site for weekend, wash streets. Apply asphalt patch (temporary restoration) to Foster excavation, remove arrow boards and barricades at Foster. Flush and pressure test new 8” water main on Glenwood. Water Quality will schedule chlorination and sampling of new main after successful pressure test.
Monday 6/18/12 – Friday 6/22/12
Sample new water main for water quality. After approval of new main by Water Quality, crews will begin to transfer individual water services to residents from the 8” 1931 main on the west side of Glenwood, and the 1892 6” water main on the east side of Glenwood to the new 8” main on the west side of Glenwood. Residences with 1″ diameter services will require approximately a 15 minute long water service shut-down, residences with 1 1/2″ or 2″ diameter services will require approximately a 30 minute long water service shut down. Crew will attempt to notify residents of their temporary water shut down shortly before the time of transfer.
Monday 6/25/12 – Friday 6/29/12 (tentative)
Complete transferring water services, begin connecting new water main to existing water mains at Farragut, Berwyn, Summerdale and Balmoral cross streets (customers on these cross streets near the Glenwood jobsite will be given a 24 hr shut down notification to facilitate these connections). Set up a 1 – day long lane closure at Foster, excavate again (just east of previous excavation for first connection) to cut out the old 8” x 6” tee connection, shut down and abandon the 1892 6” water on east side of Glenwood north of Foster. (No customers expected to be without water during this shut down)

The first connection to existing water main is complete and the entire project is approximately 40% complete.

Broadway Watermain Project
The contractors are starting to lay the watermain from Bryn Mawr heading south towards Catalpa. All NB lanes are being used during construction and therefore there is one lane going SB (SB lane further west) and one NB lane (SB lane further east) that will be open during construction. At the end of the day (4pm) traffic will be restored back to how it was originally.
No parking signs from 7am to 4pm have been posted on each side taking out the parking meters from Bryn Mawr to Catalpa.
As the contractor moves forward, the no parking signs will be removed once the contractor gets to the Catalpa-Balmoral block. Sometime mid week the contractor should be crossing Catalpa to the south and working in the Catalpa Balmoral block.

Master Plan Update

A huge thank you to everyone who has been involved so far with the 48th Ward Master Plan. Each of our 11 committees have met at least twice (some have met more!) and back in March, we held our first community visioning meeting.

Over the next two weeks, my staff and I will be meeting with the Chairs of each committee to discuss the themes, ideas, issues and goals that have emerged so far. This summer, we will be asking the broader community to weigh in on the work that has been done so far. In our weekly newsletter, we will promote which events will have a Master Plan component. We are excited to continue to work towards a shared vision for the future.
