Weekly Update from your Alderman – June 22, 2012

Weekly Update from Alderman Harry Osterman: Chicago Celebrates Pride Weekend, Summer Park Programs, Explore Edgewater and much more!

June 22, 2012

Dear Neighbor,

This weekend always marks a special occasion as we celebrate our neighborhood’s LGBT community during Chicago Gay Pride Weekend. Edgewater has been named one of the Top 10 Gayest Neighborhoods in America. This is an exciting recognition. Our community’s gay and lesbian population truly makes Edgewater a great place to live.

I hope you can all join me this Sunday at the 43rd annual Chicago Pride Parade. The parade begins at approximately 12:00 p.m. There is a new route and we will be lining up on Broadway between Montrose and Wilson. Our number in the parade is #55. We will be marching with a car (not a float), so please be prepared to walk if you join us. Visit www.chicagopridecalendar.org for more information.

If you can’t make it to the Parade, here are some other great events taking place throughout the weekend:
Cabaret at Osterman Beach – Friday, June 22, beginning at dusk. Click here for more info
Backlot Bash at 5238 N. Clark Street – Friday, June 22 – Sunday, June 24. Click here for more info.
Chicago Dyke March starting at Margate Park – Saturday, June 23. Click here for more info.

I hope you have a fun and safe Pride weekend.

Sincerely,
Harry Osterman
Alderman, 48th Ward

Tip

Keeping Your Home Safe While You’re Away
Vacation season is here for many of us. It is important to prepare your home and property for your trip away. Follow these tips when getting ready to leave your home unattended.

1) Ideally, a neighbor, friend or family member would be able to watch over your property while you are away. Try and identify such a person even before you plan a trip.

2) Stop your mail from piling up. A stack of mail or newspapers sends burglars the message that no one has been home for a while. Find someone that will take in your mail, newspapers, etc. or contact USPS and your newspaper provider to hold your items until you return.

3) Lock all your doors and windows. It seems obvious, but often people are burglarized while away because they left a window or door open that they thought was unreachable.

4) DO NOT promote your vacation. Tweeting, updated your Facebook status, or using any other social media tools to announce your vacation plans also tells the world you are leaving your home unattended for an extended period of time.

5) Put your lights on timers. Burglars look for homes that are dark, especially during later hours of the day. Investing in timers could help make sure your home isn’t targeted while you are away.

Weekly Business Highlight

Both run by owner Michelle Fire, Big Chicks and Tweet have become an Uptown- and Chicago- favorite. Born in 2003 as the sister restaurant to Big Chicks and nestled within a vintage art deco building, Tweet serves you a wide range of both classic and non-traditional dishes made from fresh, organic-when-possible ingredients. As you dine within this jewelbox of an interior, designed by artist Zuleyka Benitez, you’ll notice that the walls are filled with Michelle Fire’s personal art collection favorites. Look closely at the menu and you’ll find that many of these artists’ favorite dishes are also on the menu. No matter how you prefer your breakfast/brunch/lunch experience, Tweet provides you with many choices, all at a price that won’t make you break into your nest egg.

Big Chicks is located right next door to Tweet and is the perfect spot for a drink after that wholesome meal. They have generous drink specials every weekend and especially these next two days because of the ever popular Pride weekend. Be sure to stop in after a long day at the parade on Sunday!
