June 29, 2012
Dear Neighbor,
Yesterday I sent out a Heat Advisory with helpful tips from OEMC. The National Weather Service forecasts that temperatures will stay high throughout the weekend and next week. Please remember to be careful in the heat and if you have elderly or disabled neighbors, please offer them a helping hand.
My staff and I would like to thank you for a great Pride weekend! We all had a fantastic time marching in the Pride Parade on Sunday, and it was a pleasure to see many of you there. Whether you enjoyed the parade, the Backlot Bash, the Chicago Dyke March or one of the many celebrations taking place throughout our community, we hope you had an excellent time.
I hope you and your family have a wonderful and safe 4th of July holiday!
Sincerely,
Harry Osterman
Alderman, 48th Ward
Ward Update
Help Us Bring Public Art to the 48th Ward
On July 16th, our first outdoor sculpture piece will be installed at the NE corner of Granville and Broadway. The piece, “Soar”, is a metal sculpture by artist David Noguchi (www.noguchi.com). To raise the money for it, Alderman Osterman, the Edgewater Community Council and the Edgewater Development Corporation will hold an event on July 11th at the Pumping Company from 5:30-7:30. Requested donation will be $35. Click here for the flyer.
Yield to Pedestrian Signs Come to Clark Street
At the request of Alderman Harry Osterman and as part of a pilot program with the Chicago Department of Transportation, there are now two “Yield to Pedestrian” signs on Clark Street: one at Clark and Summerdale and one at Clark and Olive. These signs remind drivers that it is law to yield to pedestrians, and make it safer for pedestrians to cross.
Holiday Recycling and Garbage Collection
Please be advised that due to the July 4th Independence Day holiday, next week’s garbage and recycling collection will operate on a holiday schedule. As a reminder, the holiday schedule is as follows:
Curbside Service: If a resident’s regular service day falls on a holiday that is a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday, residents are asked to bring their carts to the curb on the day after the holiday. If the holiday falls on a Friday, residents should bring their carts out to the curb on the day before the holiday.
Alley Service: Residents who receive alley collection service should ensure their carts are accessible to crews the entire week.
We appreciate your continued cooperation and partnership.

City Council Update
Fines for Marijuana Ordinance
I voted in support of an ordinance that would allow Chicago Police to issue tickets for marijuana possession. I supported this measure because I believe it is a new tool that will help reduce drug and gang activity in our communities. It was shown that 9 out of 10 arrests for marijuana possession are thrown out, meaning that there is currently no disincentive. This measure will hit drug dealers and possessors in their pocket books. If someone is found on school property, park property or smoking the substance, they will be arrested. While I supported this measure, I will be closely monitoring how it is implemented within our ward. Honoring Rickover
JROTC Students
This week in City Council, I co-sponsored a resolution to recognize the 2012 JROTC awardees. The Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (Junior ROTC) is a program sponsored by the United States Armed Services in high schools across the country to train high school students in leadership, character education and military sciences. One of the greatest distinctions that a Junior ROTC cadet can achieve is to serve on the elite, citywide Junior ROTC City Corps Staff. This year, twenty students from nine Chicago Public High Schools. Among those recognized at City Council, four attended our very own Rickover Naval Academy: Elizabeth Akinbusuyi (City Corps Staff), Marcus Guerra (City Corp Staff, Accepted to The University of Chicago), Sebastian Rodriguez (Accepted to NROTC Northwestern University), and Axel Sierra (Accepted to SROTC University of Illinois at Chicago).

Honoring TPAN’s Annual Ride for AIDS
I co-sponsored a resolution to celebrate the cyclists of Ride for AIDS Chicago. Ride for AIDS Chicago is a yearly two-day, 200 mile bicycling fundraising event produced by TPAN (Test Positive Aware Network) in which 100% of the money raised goes to charity. TPAN’s office is located just next to ours on Broadway and they are now celebrating 25 of service to the HIV community in Chicago. It’s not too late to get involved! Click here for their website.

They will learn critical thinking while they play in the puzzle zone, shop at the market, or cook in the kitchen!
