Weekly Update from your Alderman – June 8, 2012

Weekly Update from Alderman Harry Osterman: Midsommarfest, Grid Garbage, Edgewater Farmers Market and much more!

June 8, 2012

Dear Neighbor,

The 47th annual Andersonville Midsommarfest kicks off tonight on Clark Street. It will last Friday night through Sunday night (click here for the full schedule).  Stop by the 48th ward table to pick up our first year report, give us service requests or just to say hello! I hope you enjoy the festivities and please remember to stay hydrated – it’s going to be hot!

Last Friday at midnight, the Granville station closed for 6 weeks (until July 13, 2012) to undergo renovations to the track, platform, station house and commercial spaces. Thorndale and Loyola stations will remain open during this time as well as regular bus service on Sheridan Rd. Click here to read more information about the Granville station closure and the Red Ahead project. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact our office at 773-784-5277 or Harry@48thward.org

Ward Update

Grid Garbage Roll-Out
Grid garbage collection will begin this Monday June 11, 2012 in the 48th Ward. You may have already received notices on your garbage can to remind you of the new program. Our Ward is split into two parts: north of Bryn Mawr will be picked up on Tuesdays and south of Bryn Mawr will be picked up on Fridays. This program solely applies to garbage collection – not recycling – which will remain on the same schedule and will run out of the north side recycling center*.
* Households with curbside pick-up will follow the new schedule.

Here are some helpful links:

If your garbage car becomes too full during the transition week, you are encouraged to call 311 to request assistance or call the 48th Ward office at 773-784-5277. As the new schedule is rolled out, there will be extra trucks patrolling alleys to service these carts, and trouble shoot similar issues.

Thorndale Safety Update
I am proud to report that the 20th Police District detailed a foot patrol officer to the 1100 block of Thorndale and surrounding area. The officer started last Monday and will join the 24th District foot patrolman in working to keep this area of our community safe for students, businesses, and neighborhood residents. Additionally, the CTA has added a security team to Thorndale while the Granville station is closed. My office is working with the Police, Park District and CPS to ensure a safe summer on Thorndale.

Construction Update

Edgewater Library
The site has been leveled and the builders are waiting for the steel to be delivered. Last minute quality control checks and verification that all materials have been fabricated in accordance with the plans and specifications are being made. Once these checks are complete, delivery will be made and steel installation can begin. Steel installation will take approximately 3 weeks to complete. On Thursday, I met with new Chicago Library Commissioner Brian Bannon to discuss the new Edgewater library.

Broadway Water Main Project
The water service transfers will begin today (6/8), and are expected to last approximately 4 working days. After this there will be a couple of water main shutdowns to perform a couple final connections. The underground pipe work should be complete near the beginning of the week of 6/18. This will be followed by concrete base course installation in the trench. We expect the concrete cap to be completed by 6/22. Street and sidewalk restoration will follow and is expected to last 30 days.

Glenwood Water Main Project

Master Plan Update

A huge thank you to everyone who has been involved so far with the 48th Ward Master Plan. Each of our 11 committees have met at least twice (some have met more!) and back in March, we held our first community visioning meeting.

Over the next two weeks, my staff and I will be meeting with the Chairs of each committee to discuss the themes, ideas, issues and goals that have emerged so far. This summer, we will be asking the broader community to weigh in on the work that has been done so far. In our weekly newsletter, we will promote which events will have a Master Plan component. We are excited to continue to work towards a shared vision for the future.

Texting a Tip to the Police

The Chicago Police Department has developed another measure to report criminal activity.  The TXT2TIP program can help citizens report tips anonymously and discreetly to their local police department.  To submit a tip, send your message to 274637 (CRIMES), and begin your message with “CPD” to ensure the proper department receives your tip.

Click here to learn more information on how to text-a-tip, and keep in mind, the Cook County Crime Stoppers are offering up to $1,000 dollars for tips leading to arrests.

Visit their website
The Raven Theatre is a not-for-profit, theatre arts organization consisting of an ensemble of artists dedicated to presenting American classics and other works that illuminate the American experience. It was incorporated in 1983 but has since moved to their current location on Clark Street. They moved from a 70-person store front theatre to their Clark location in 2002 which boasts two stages, one that seats about 60 and another that seats about 150.

Entering their 30th season, Raven Theatre has become an institution in our area. They have partnered with five Chicago schools (Senn High School, Sullivan High School, Peirce Elementary, Stone Scholastic Academy, and Hayt Elementary) in their Take Flight Program to establish a theatre arts program for students.

Excited about their upcoming milestone season, Raven will be producing a number of plays under the theme “Power Plays” highlighting ambitious characters and power struggles. Currently, the Raven Theatre is showing their production of Bang the Drum Slowly and it will run through June 30th. Be sure to check it out, critics have been raving!
