May 11, 2012
Dear Neighbor,
I want to wish all of our 48th Ward mothers a very happy Mother’s Day. The success of our community has been built on many mothers who not only have raised wonderful families here, but have given and continue to give back to their neighborhood, community organizations, block clubs, schools, churches and much more. We celebrate each and every one of you this weekend.
I also want to extend appreciation to President Barack Obama for making history this week as the first sitting President to support gay marriage, and is an important step towards marriage equality. This is a pinnacle moment in history, one of which many in our community have fought and waited for many years.
Our 48th Ward Office will host the annual City Sticker Sales Day this Wednesday, May 16 from 9:00am – 4:00pm. Please join us and click here for more information.

Ward Update
Grid Garbage Roll-Out
This week, Department of Streets and Sanitation announced the phased roll out of grid garbage collection that will begin on June 11, 2012, including the 48th Ward. This program will save money for our City and will better streamline garbage collection efficiency.

Click here to view a map of the new system. Our Ward is split into two parts: north of Bryn Mawr will be picked up on Tuesdays and south of Bryn Mawr will be picked up on Fridays. This program solely applies to garbage collection – not recycling – which will remain on the same schedule and will run out of the north side recycling center. Safety Update
Last Saturday morning, a woman’s body was found in the west alley in the 5600 block of Broadway. The death was ruled as a homicide by area Police, who are currently investigating.
48th Ward E-Waste Collection Huge Success!
Congrats to everyone who participated in the E-Waste recycling event on the Clean & Green Day. 25,784 lbs of waste was collected and our location collected the most for that day.

On Tuesday, I sent out an update on the 2012 City Sticker Process. You can purchase and pick up your city stickers on May 16 at the 48th ward service office, 5533 N Broadway. Other options, such as online purchase, are also available. To find out more, click here.

Participants: BARGE Neighbors Community Organization, Edgewater Glen Association (EGA), Edgewater North Neighbors (ENN), EPIC Block Club. The sale will take place Saturday, June 2 from 9am – 4pm from Ridge to Devon, Clark to Broadway.
City Council Update
Chicago Business Licensing Reforms
At this week’s City Council meeting, I voted in support of an ordinance that makes Chicago’s business licensing system simpler, smarter, and more streamlined by reducing the number of license types by 60 percent. By cutting the number of license categories from 117 to 49, the reform will save over 10,000 small businesses $2 million in license fees each year and will have a positive impact on many of the small businesses within our community. This reform will ease the process of doing business with the City for well-run businesses and will allow for more time cracking down on problematic businesses. Click here for the full press release.
Resolution in Honor of Commander Tooker
Next week marks the 25th anniversary of a missile attack on the USS Stark in the Persian Gulf, whereby 37 crewmen were killed. On Wednesday, the City Council honored Commaner William “Mike” Tooker who was a Lieutenant Junior Grade assigned to the USS Stark on his first deployment, and joined fellow shipmates in rescuing injured sailors from areas of the Stark engulfed in flames. Commander Tooker is currently the Commandment of the Hyman G. Rickover Naval Academy, located in our community.
Construction Updates
Edgewater Library
The Edgewater Library construction is underway and the deep caisson foundation work was completed in April. The General Contractor, Burling Builders immediately began excavation of the shallow foundation for the building. Approximately 25% of the forms were set, rebar was placed and the first concrete grade beam was poured on May 10, 2012.
CTA Summer Construction
Granville will be the first station to undergo improvements this summer as part of the CTA’s Red Ahead program, as explained in this newsletter. The station will be closed for a maximum of 6 weeks and has a new start date of June 1, 2012. Commuters at this station will be notified via signage.
