Ward Update

City Sticker Sales
On Wednesday, 300 ward residents came to our office to purchase their City Stickers. They were joined by City Clerk Susana Mendoza. If you were unable to attend the ward sales day and need to purchase a City Sticker, you can do so online or at City Clerk locations: City Hall (121 N. LaSalle St.), North Side Satellite Office (5430 W. Gale Street), South Side Satellite Office (5674 S. Archer). Visit the City Clerk’s website for more information.

One Year Report
This past Wednesday marked the one-year anniversary of serving as your Alderman. It has been an exciting year and I am thankful to you for working with my team and I in partnership on making our community a better place to live. Next Friday, we will release a one-year report summarizing the year. As always, feel free to reach out to me at 773-784-5277 or Harry@48thward.org if you have thoughts or ideas about our first year.

Grid Garbage Roll-Out

This week, Department of Streets and Sanitation announced the phased roll out of grid garbage collection that will begin on June 11, 2012, including the 48th Ward.
This program will save money for our City and will better streamline garbage collection efficiency.
Click here to view a map of the new system. Our Ward is split into two parts: north of Bryn Mawr will be picked up on Tuesdays and south of Bryn Mawr will be picked up on Fridays. This program solely applies to garbage collection – not recycling – which will remain on the same schedule and will run out of the north side recycling center.

Education Update

Teacher Appreciation and Principal’s Breakfast
On Friday, May 11 over 50 teachers from our local schools joined me at Burke’s Public House for an appreciation reception. We celebrated our teachers with refreshments and a raffle with prizes to local businesses. Yesterday, I hosted a principal’s breakfast at Ann Sather. It was an excellent time of sharing pressing topics, needs, resources and more. If you have a question or need regarding Education, please contact Karen Dreyfuss at Karen@48thward.org or 773-784-5277.

Senn High School International Fest
Save the date! On Thursday, May 24 at 7:00 pm, Senn High School is holding its annual International Fest. This event showcases and celebrates the diversity of Senn’s student body. It is a family friendly event held in Senn’s newly renovated auditorium. This year the students will be acting out stories of their arrival to Senn and to the US, in addition to performing music and dance from their countries. The event is open to the public.

Construction Updates

Edgewater Library
The Edgewater Library construction is underway and contractor Burling Builders poured the second grade beam on Wednesday and are now 67% complete with the underground structure that will support the building. The plan is to complete this work by the end of the month and begin setting steel in early June.

CTA Summer Construction
Granville will be the first station to undergo improvements this summer as part of the CTA’s Red Ahead program, as explained in this newsletter. The station will be closed for a maximum of 6 weeks and has a new start date of June 1, 2012. Commuters at this station will be notified via signage. Rivendell Theatre
5775 N. Ridge Ave.
Chicago, IL 60660

(773) 334-7728
After 16 years as an itinerant company, Rivendell Theatre Ensemble moved into its permanent home at 5779 N. Ridge Avenue, and opened its 2012 season on March 8th with “Falling A Wake” a play by Gary Kirkham.

Rivendell Theatre Ensemble is a professional theatre company committed to recognizing and cultivating the talents of women in theatre – from playwrights and actors to technical stage craft artists.  Their productions explore the unique female perspectives of everyday stories in an intimate, salon environment.  The Company has been nominated for and won numerous Jefferson Awards (Chicago’s Theater Community Honor) over its 16 year history, and is sure to continue its success.

Edgewater is fortunate to add Rivendell to its expansive theatre roster, helping to establish Edgewater and the 48th Ward as a thriving Arts community.  Rivendell proudly opens its second production in the Ridge Avenue space on May 20th with “Crooked”, the story of a young woman’s struggle to overcome numerous obstacles dealt her in life, by Catherine Trieschmann.  More information about Rivendell and its theatre offerings can be found atwww.rivendelltheatre.org.
