Weekly Update from Alderman Harry Osterman: CTA Public Art Meeting, Edgewater GRalley, Beach Clean-Up and more!

September 14, 2012

Dear Neighbor,
Both the Chicago Teachers Union and Chicago Public Schools officials claim to have made progress toward concluding their contract negotiations and ending the strike. My office will send out more information later today or this weekend as we receive it.

There are many great events this weekend in our community. On Saturday morning, my office will join ASCO and the Great Lakes Alliance for a beach clean-up at Osterman Beach from 9am – 12pm. Volunteers are still needed! Please call 773-784-5277 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting            773-784-5277     end_of_the_skype_highlighting or e-mail Jared@48thward.org to sign  up.
Afterwards, enjoy the Edgewater GRalley on Saturday from noon – 10:00pm on Glenwood between Granville and Rosemont. On Sunday, visit Vintage Garage Chicago monthly market and food truck cafe or take a tour of Edgewater houses during the Edgewater Historical Society’s annual Home Tour!
Yesterday I sent out an email with the latest CTA construction updates. While Thorndale and Argyle stations remain close, both streets will be open for thru traffic this weekend. Click here to read the full newsletter. Throughout construction on Argyle, remember that Argyle Street is open for business! Check out our sidebar for many reasons to visit Argyle Street.
Rosh Hashanah begins on September 16. A Happy New Year to all our friends who celebrate the Jewish High Holidays
Sincerely, Harry Osterman Alderman, 48th Ward

Ward Update
Dedication of Andersonville Bike Corral This morning I joined the Andersonville Development Corporation, Hopleaf owner Michael Roper and community residents to celebrate and dedicate the new on-street bike parking at 5146 N. Clark. This bike corral is part of my  vision of a 48th Ward that is more friendly and safe for cyclists. It was sponsored by the Hopleaf Bar and Restaurant.
CTA Public Art Meeting – Tuesday, Sept. 18 With all the construction going on at our CTA stations, I am excited to announce that the CTA will be soliciting proposals for original art works to be installed inside each of the refurbished stations(Granville, Thorndale, Berwyn, Argyle and Lawrence).  This program has been hugely successful city-wide and will result in the addition of major works to the 50 pieces currently on exhibit at 41 other CTA stations.

All who are interested in hearing about the request, proposal, and selection process are invited to attend a presentation by representatives of the CTA on Tuesday September 18th at the Broadway Armory beginning at 6:30pm.

Save the Date: Panhandling Seminar – Monday, September 24 Our local Community Justice Center is hosting a seminar on panhandling that will take place Monday, September 24 at 6:30 p.m. at the Edgewater Presbyterian Church; 1020 W. Bryn Mawr Ave. (Fellowship Hall).  We encourage you to attend this important seminar to learn what you can do to deter panhandling in our community, and how we can better assist those in need throughout our neighborhood. Weekly Safety Tip

Walk Your Block
One great way to keep bad guys off the streets is to fill it with good guys. The more you and your neighbors walk the streets, the more deterred gang bangers and drug dealers are from being there.  Please walk your neighborhood as much as you can and encourage your fellow block residents and dog walkers/owners to do the same.
While you are out there, please let my office know of any safety concerns that you notice.  This may include graffiti, lights blocked by tree branches, or chronic loitering spots. All of this information is very useful to us in helping to improve the quality of life for our neighborhood.  Help our office be the “”eyes”" on the street. Visit www.48thward.org, or email harry@48thward.org to let us know of any safety concerns.
Positive Loitering
Thorndale Positive loitering on Thorndale and immediate vicinity will begin at 7 p.m. Monday, September 17, at the northeast corner of Broadway and Thorndale (Little Corner Restaurant).  Please note the new starting time.

Education Corner With the start of a new school year, Alderman Harry Osterman is launching a new series highlighting our local schools, education groups, principals, parent groups, teachers and students! The 48th Ward is rich with great local schools – both public and private – and we are excited to share their successes with all of you.

At Chicago Friends School, we believe a good education helps each child find and develop his/her unique talents and which starts them on a course of lifelong learning.
Chicago Friends School (CFS) offers the same modest tuition rate ($9500) as area religious schools.  CFS offers a curriculum based on Quaker values, values central to the Quaker faith and practice but also embraced by many other faith groups.  Chicago Friends School offers a quality education for this modest tuition.  Project-based- inquiry learning, small class sizes, a student:teacher ratio of 10:1, a commitment to the environment and to the arts, outdoor recess, and a school garden comprise just some of what’s offered.  CFS is unique and just what some families are looking for in a school for their children.
We have a combined kindergarten/first grade class facilitated by lead teacher, Lesley Grill, and assistant teacher, Debra Eason.  School started on September 4th with a family breakfast potluck.  Our students had a busy first week:  creating a classroom agreement to be safe, kind, and respectful; doing self-portraits; going on a nature walk and doing leaf rubbings; starting their number books; and writing about what makes them feel good.  We will grow by one grade per year until we are K-8.
Because CFS is committed to creating a diverse student body, in socioeconomic status as well as in other dimensions, financial support is provided to families who would otherwise be unable to send their children to the school. Besides the tuition assistance available to all for up to half of the annual tuition, CFS has established a scholarship fund to help those who can’t afford the remainder.  Our fund is called the Patricia Moles Scholarship Fund.  CFS wants its doors open to all of Chicago’s children.
